Dave Curry says that aside from 2020, he hasn’t missed a single Summer Olympics since 1996.

Curry said he was determined not to miss another one.

“I’m going. I paid for a hotel in advance, I bought tickets,” he said.

The opening ceremony will begin Friday at 1:30 p.m. Eastern time. Curry’s Delta flight, which will last more than eight and a half hours, is scheduled for Tuesday night.

“I have a reserve, just in case,” he said.

He was, however, able to see images from airports around the world that began streaming Friday morning. Nearly 3,000 flights were canceled and more than 4,000 delayed in Atlanta alone, according to FlightAware.com.

In a statement released Sunday, Delta’s CEO wrote:

“The technical issue occurred during the busiest travel weekend of the summer, with our bookings exceeding 90%, limiting re-accommodation capacity.”

“It’s been a long day, I could cry,” said Kristen Gallagher, one of the thousands of people affected. “I thought it would be better today. I wouldn’t have left my house if I thought it was going to be a lockdown again.”

The embattled traveler is ready to offer advice to optimist Dave Curry and others like him.

“Be patient. Everyone is doing the best they can,” Gallagher said.

The airport said it is working with its airline partners to resolve issues caused by the software outage. Airlines are asking travelers to check the website, app or social media for updates before heading to the airport.
