Harris County Precinct 4 Partners with Houston Food Bank to Provide Free Summer Meals

Harris County Precinct 4 Partners with Houston Food Bank to Provide Free Summer Meals

Houston ISD’s summer meal program began Monday and runs through July 19, providing free breakfast and lunch to all children 18 and under.

HOUSTON (KIAH) – Feeding America reported that more than 22 million children rely on school breakfast and lunch programs. According to a report from the National Food Bank, Texans are at higher risk of food insecurity, with most families with young children and Black and Latino residents at the highest risk. On average, 1 in 4 children in Texas go hungry. Once school is out, what happens next?

School districts have worked to combat food insecurity in their neighborhoods. Houston ISD launched its summer meals program earlier this month, providing all children with free breakfasts and lunches.

The Katy Independent School District is also providing meals to students throughout the summer at no cost. The program will run through August 2. CW39 Houston’s Idolina Paralez tells us more about the program.

Spring ISD is expanding its program to children in surrounding neighborhoods. Children under 18 are eligible for free breakfast and lunch at all Spring ISD schools.

Harris County is now joining the effort. In partnership with the Houston Food Bank, Commissioner Lesley Briones will provide free summer meals to children in the Houston area. Through August 9, children can enjoy free breakfast, lunch and snacks at nearby community centers. Below are the community centers offering free meals.
