Woman dies in traffic accident on I-135 south of Newton

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – To update: According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, a woman was killed after an accident on I-135 south of Newton.

According to KHP, the accident occurred shortly after 1:40 p.m. near the southeast exit of 36th Street.

A KHP trooper said a woman in her 30s from Newton was driving southbound when she crossed the center line and struck a semi-truck, causing her to be ejected from the vehicle. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

KHP is investigating whether she was wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the semi-trailer was not injured.

KHP announced that they plan to reopen the highway around 7 p.m.

The Harvey County Sheriff’s Office is responding to a fatal crash in the northbound lanes of Interstate 135 near the 36th Street exit, south of Newton.

The Harvey County Sheriff’s Office said northbound I-135 will be closed for the next one to two hours.
