SUNSET BEACH, NC (WNCN) — A young man is being treated for injuries following an incident Tuesday at a North Carolina beach, according to Sunset Beach police.

At around 11:23 a.m., officers said they were called to East Main Street near 11th Street because a 20-year-old man had injured himself while swimming.

When officers arrived, they said the man had sustained a cut on his lower leg while swimming in the Atlantic Ocean.

Police said the incident was initially reported as a shark bite, but the exact cause of the injury is unknown.

“It appears the injury was caused by a marine creature,” police said.

According to police, emergency services immediately took the man to the hospital for treatment.

The police said they currently have no further information.
