Juneteenth Programs to Celebrate This Weekend with the Heritage Society

HOUSTON (KIAH) – Juneteenth is a federal holiday celebrated annually on Juneteenth to commemorate the end of slavery. As the community celebrates, many programs and festivals are held in the community for free.

The Heritage Society is hosting one of several “From Plantation to Emancipation” programs this Saturday, June 15, aimed at highlighting the Black Cowboys who worked to raise awareness of the ranching industry in Houston.

Special guests include Rev. Jack Yates, artists from the National Gospel Choir and Choir Convention, founder Larry Callies of the Black Cowboy Museum and Rodeo Cowboy Harold Case.

“Participants will enjoy red punch and a tea cake reception from Lucy Pearl, gospel songs, General Order No. 3, learn about the Jack Yates House and the impact of the Black Cowboys in Texas. We also plan to highlight how three of the city-owned historic houses on our June 19 tour are designated as memorial sites for the UNESCO “Routes of Enslaved Peoples” project.

Following the program, there will be a guided tour of Houston with re-enactments titled “From Plantation to Emancipation.” The tour costs $25 and the ticket includes Lucy Pearl’s teacakes and red punch.

Another opportunity to celebrate Juneteenth is to attend the Juneteenth Teacakes Black History Tour on June 15 and 19 at 10:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m. or 2:30 p.m. for $17. There is a list of all Juneteenth events happening through June 20, 2024 at Heritagesociety.org and ticket information.
