Maine police release investigation documents into Lewiston shooting

Maine State Police on Friday released more than 3,000 pages of investigative documents related to the Lewiston shooting and response to it. A total of 18 people were killed and 13 others injured in the shooting on October 25, 2023. The documents, released early Friday afternoon, follow a series of Freedom of Access Act requests from 8 Investigates and are the first public release of investigative documents. The documents include reports from Maine State Police as well as other law enforcement agencies that assisted in both the response and investigation. Many of the documents have been heavily redacted. The release includes an After Action Report (AAR) from the Maine State Police Tactical Team and describes some issues related to communication and response. The release provides details about what the FBI knew about the shooter, Robert Card, during the manhunt, including new information about where he was prior to the shooting and what his mental state was that day. In those requests, they asked that certain things not be disclosed. Police said they will continue to review other types of recordings, including audio, video and photographic recordings, and will release them when they are able to do so.The documents released Friday reference several images, videos and surveillance video files collected during the investigation.8 Investigates is working to review the documents and will provide updates on their contents as we work through them all.The release comes as we await a final report from the independent commission investigating the shooting and its circumstances. They are believed to have met for the last time just before Memorial Day, during which time testimony from the family of shooter Robert Card was also heard.
