Buffalo Bills play-by-play announcer resigns

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills announced Thursday morning that longtime play-by-play announcer John Murphy will put down his microphone and step down.

A Lockport native, Murphy was inducted into the Buffalo Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2019.

Murphy has been the “voice of the Bills” for 35 years, starting as a color analyst in 1984 and play-by-play commentator starting in 2004.

In a statement posted on the Buffalo Bills website, they wrote: “John’s love and enthusiasm for the Bills and Western New York has been evident in his over 30 years in the booth. We will all miss his big calls and his passion as a player. “We continue to wish him and his family all the best during his recovery and hope he can remain a part of our organization moving forward,” Bills owner Terry Pegula said in a statement.

During an interview on WBEN, Murphy said he was ready for the next chapter in his life and was ready to move on.

In January 2023, Murphy suffered a stroke and missed four games during that season to recover.
