Stormy Saturday could be in the forecast for parts of Houston – Space City Weather

In short: Although the likelihood of severe weather is lower today, the Houston area is still likely to experience developing storms later in the morning, lasting into the afternoon. Pay attention to the weather if you are traveling today.

Welcome to June and the start of Atlantic hurricane season. Speaking of which, on our companion site The Eyewall, Matt lays out some reasons why you should be wary, but don’t really worry about what should be a frenzied season. The good news is that things seem calm at the moment.

However, today’s weather may not be calm in Houston. As of 9:30 a.m. this morning, a mass of showers and thunderstorms developed southwest of Houston, near Palacios and Matagorda Bay. In general, I expect these storms to pick up toward the north-northeast across the metro area later this morning and throughout the afternoon.

What does that mean? If you have planned activities between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. today, you should be aware of the weather. Considering variables like atmospheric instability, I don’t think we’re facing chaos. Yes, there is a risk of small hail or damaging winds, but conditions are not ideal for extreme weather. So that’s a possibility. Perhaps a bigger concern is that some of today’s storms could be slow-moving, so a few parts of Houston could see 2 to 4 inches of rain and street flooding. However, for most of us, I think the impact will be less. In any case, it looks like things will start to brighten up with the loss of daytime heating this evening.

I’m not too confident in the forecast for Sunday, but it seems possible that we could see a few scattered or isolated showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon, again, with daytime heating. Coverage should be less than today. If the forecast changes significantly later today or on Sunday, we will update it as warranted. Otherwise, we will see each other again Monday morning.
