Houston-area storms turn deadly with 1 dead in Magnolia collapse

MAGNOLIA, TX – One person was killed in a collapse at a construction site near Houston as severe weather hit southeast Texas on Tuesday.

Two homes under construction near Magnolia, about an hour northwest of Houston, collapsed, according to firefighters. Workers were trapped in the rubble, according to a National Weather Service storm report.

Firefighters said a few hours later that a person had been found dead in the rubble.

The collapse occurred as a series of storms, which caused significant damage in the Dallas area earlier Tuesday, moved through the Houston metro area. Winds gusted up to 120 km/h at George Bush Intercontinental Airport, located about half an hour from the collapse site.

Texas was hit hard by storms during the month of May.

Over Memorial Day weekend, a tornado north of Dallas killed seven people, including two children. It was the deadliest tornado to hit the state since 2015.

Houston was ravaged by a derecho on May 16 that killed eight people, caused widespread damage throughout the city’s core and left more than a million people without power for days in the metro area.
