Suspect dies after officer-involved shooting in Athens

ATHENS, Ala. – An investigation is underway after a suspect died as a result of an officer-involved shooting in Athens.

Officers responded to a call of the suspect threatening a homeowner with a gun. When officers arrived, the suspect fled the scene.

According to Athens police, officers asked the suspect several times to “give up the weapon.” The suspect fired the gun and again attempted to flee the scene by walking into a residential neighborhood on Songbird Drive.

An officer then used a Taser on the suspect. Officials said the suspect pointed his gun at the officers despite being hit by the Taser.

The suspect was shot around 7:20 p.m. and died at the scene.

Police say no one else was involved and there is no longer any danger to the public.

The State Bureau of Investigations will oversee the investigation.
