Driver killed in South Bay

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) – A driver was killed in a crash on a major highway in the Chula Vista area Monday, authorities said.

The collision occurred around 9:30 p.m. on southbound Interstate 5, north of Palomar Street, Salvador Castro of the California Highway Patrol said in a news release Tuesday.


According to authorities, the driver of a Volkswagen Passat was traveling southbound on I-5 at a high rate of speed when he made a right turn and struck a tree.

CHP confirmed that the unidentified Volkswagen driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office is investigating whether driving under the influence played a role in the crash.

Authorities did not close the southbound lanes of I-5 during the investigation.
