Houston Texans prioritize learning during rookie minicamp

The Houston Texans welcomed each of their first-year prospects to the league this weekend. They held a two-day rookie minicamp at NRG Stadium, which gave each prospect the opportunity to experience the team’s culture and expectations.

“We were all excited about the draft and acquiring these guys,” coach DeMeco Ryans said after the first day of practice Friday. “It’s always exciting as a coach to go out and have the opportunity to take guys through the drills that you’ve been trying to teach them and see the things that they remember from your sessions.”

Rookie camp had a different vibe than the previous year, which featured CJ Stroud and Will Anderson Jr., who would go on to win Defensive and Offensive Rookie of the Year, respectively.

Ryans wanted to keep his potential recruits manageable during their first workouts at the Houston Methodist Training Center. He also wants to postpone any early assessment. His top priority, aside from learning, was adapting his players to the Houston climate.

In the latest episode of Locked On Texans, Coty M. Davis and John Hickman recap what they took away from the rookie minicamp while determining whether or not the upcoming season will be a learning year for the class of 2024.

“This period or this phase here with the rookie minicamp, we’re just trying to adjust our guys to the way we do things,” Ryans said.

“Get them used to our terminology, to what we’re teaching. For us, it’s more of a teaching period. Again, as you’ve seen, there aren’t a lot of long lines of “Some position groups have one or two guys, so we’re taking our time and doing a great job teaching those guys so they’re ready to roll with our veterans when they return on Monday.”

Kamari Lassiter leads Houston’s rookie class. The Texans made Lassiter their first overall selection with the No. 42 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Lassiter entered the draft as one of the top defensive backs after a successful three-year stint at Georgia. He helped the Bulldogs build one of the best defensive teams in college football – recording 86 career tackles and 14 pass deflections in 44 games.
