One person was found dead inside a burning home that was engulfed in flames and damaged a second home in Buffalo Grove on Monday, authorities said.

The Buffalo Grove Fire Department and Buffalo Grove Police Department responded around 10:22 a.m. Monday to the 600 block of Woodhollow Lane in Buffalo Grove for a report of a structure fire.

Village officials said a 911 caller reported the fire started in a garage attached to a home.

Firefighters arrived five minutes after receiving the call and found a two-story residence with an attached garage.

Heavy flames were coming from the garage and spreading to the house.

There were also reports of a missing occupant.

Firefighters began an aggressive attack inside the garage and house, using water hoses. They also began searching for trapped occupants.

Firefighters found an unidentified occupant inside the building. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office is planning an autopsy on the victim, whose identity has not yet been released.

The fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes, but firefighters remained on scene into the afternoon to investigate the cause of the fire.

A neighboring house suffered damage to its exterior siding as a result of the fire.

The investigation is being conducted by the Buffalo Grove Fire Department and the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office.

The Buffalo Grove Fire Department was assisted by fire departments from Arlington Heights, Lincolnshire, Lindenhurst, Lake Forest, Long Grove, Wheeling, Prospect Heights, Glenview, Wauconda and Rolling Meadows.

Buffalo Grove Public Works also responded to the scene after a water main ruptured while firefighters were putting out the blaze.

The burst water main caused flooding of the street and sidewalk, but did not slow down firefighters’ efforts to extinguish the blaze.

Public works crews feared a roadway collapse and kept people away from the area while they worked to mitigate the leak.
