First case of sexually transmitted fungus detected in the USA

If you are planning a wild and carefree summer, you may want to think again. According to a recent case report, a sexually transmitted Ringworm caused by a rare fungal infection has entered the United States for the first time. This report follows numerous clinicians worldwide who are experiencing difficulties in treating such Infections.

The case involves a New York City man who had sexual intercourse with several men during a trip to England, California and Greece. When he returned home, the man, in his 30s, developed a red and itchy rash on his groin, buttocks and legs.

Tests revealed that the man had been infected with a sexually transmitted fungus called Trichophyton mentagrophytes type VII. This is the first time the fungus has been reported in the United States. Last year, 13 cases were identified in France, 12 of which were in men who had sex with other men.

Fortunately, the man’s infection responded to medication and cleared up completely within four and a half months. He was initially prescribed fluconazole for four weeks, then terbinafine for six weeks and itraconazole for about eight weeks. It is also important to note that the man had visited a sauna two months before the onset of symptoms.
