Wednesday, September 18th is National Cheeseburger Day, and in a historic event, it marks 100 years since it arrived on the scene. If you’re hungry for one, there’s plenty on offer.

Hamburgers may be America’s most popular dish, but topping it with cheese takes it to another level. So of course there is a National Cheeseburger Day, which happens to be on Wednesday.

Cheeseburgers remain one of the top favorite appetizers in the US, according to YouGov’s ranking of America’s most popular foods. While the hamburger tops the regularly updated list with 85% popularity, the cheeseburger is close at 83%, just behind fries and grilled cheese (both at 84%) and tied with chicken fried (83%).

Americans eat about 50 billion burgers each year. Almost three-quarters of burger lovers (74%) say they regularly top their burgers with cheese, YouGov found.

While there is no historical significance to National Cheeseburger Day that arrives annually on September 18, there remains a dispute over the birth of the burger. Pasadena, California claims its birthplace, with a 16-year-old chef serving the first more than 100 years ago in a roadside hamburger stand. Other places that claim the cheeseburger’s birthright include Kaelin’s restaurant in Louisville in 1934, to which the name “cheeseburger” was attributed.

Whatever the origin of the cheeseburger, if you’re craving one, many restaurants and burger joints have deals and specials for them on Wednesdays.

On the McDonald’s app, you can find a 50-cent double cheeseburger deal on Wednesdays.

Burger King’s week of deals includes National Cheeseburger Day

Members of the fast-food chain’s free Royal Perks loyalty program can get a free cheeseburger with a purchase of $1 or more on Wednesday. Burger King has several offers throughout the week.

All this week’s deals from Burger King’s Royal Perks program:

  • Tuesday: Free Original Chicken Sandwich with a purchase of $1 or more
  • Wednesday: Free Cheeseburger with $1 or more purchase
  • Thursday: Free Order of 4 Mozzarella Fries with a purchase of $1 or more
  • Friday: A free Croissan’wich with a purchase of $1 or more
  • Saturday: Free order of 4 fries with a purchase of $1 or more
  • Sunday: Free soft drink (any size) with purchase of $1 or more

Download the Wendy’s app to get a 1-cent Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger deal with any purchase Wednesday through Sunday (app download and account registration required).

Buffalo Wild Wings BOGO cheeseburgers, plus free wings

Members of Buffalo Wild Wings’ Blazin’ Rewards loyalty program can buy one burger and get one free on Wednesdays, with options including Jason Kelce’s Choice, Triple Bacon Burger and the new Bacon Mac & Cheese Burger. If you’re not a Blazin’ Rewards member, sign up by September 18th to get the offer. It’s good for dine-in, takeout and delivery through Buffalo Wild Wings GO.

Applebee’s Classic Burger offer

Applebee’s is offering customers a “classic burger deal” on Wednesday, which includes one of three of its classic artisan burgers paired with classic fries for $8.99.

Customers can choose between Applebee’s Classic Burger, Classic Cheeseburger or Classic Bacon Cheeseburger, and the offer is available for dine-in or online at Applebees.com or the Applebee’s mobile app.

Customers ordering in the app can select the “National Cheeseburger Day” option from the online menu to redeem the offer.

Dairy Queen free double Original Cheeseburger Signature Stackburger with purchase

Today through Sunday, Dairy Queen is offering customers a free Double Stackburger Signature Original Cheeseburger with an app or online order of $1 or more.

The burger contains two beef patties, Sharp American cheese, pickles, ketchup and mustard, according to the company, and the offer is valid at participating DQ Grill & Chill locations nationwide. Offer is limited to one redemption per customer and is not valid for in-store redemption.

SONIC has more National Cheeseburger Day deals

For those looking to celebrate National Cheeseburger Day early, Sonic is offering half-price cheeseburgers after 5pm every Tuesday, including September 17th.

Additionally, customers can get a quarter-pound double cheeseburger for $1.99 for a limited time or a Smasher Sonic for $7.
