Buffalo Bills invite New York-born lax pro player for tryout

One word comes to mind to describe the Buffalo Bills’ roster-building strategy this offseason: creative.

In April, Buffalo spent a seventh-round pick on an athlete who had never played in an organized football game before. That said, their selection of rugby star Travis Clayton was seen by many as a low-risk, high-reward move.

The same could be said of their decision to invite Zed Williams to their rookie minicamp.

For those who don’t know, Williams is one of the best professional lacrosse players in the world. Williams plays in the National Lacrosse League, and he and his team, the Colorado Mammoth, won the 2022 NLL championship by defeating the Buffalo Bandits.

Williams and the Mammoth faced the Bandits again in the 2023 Finals, but the Bandits emerged victorious in the rematch.

In the outdoor game, Williams has previously played in Major League Lacrosse (MLL) and currently plays in the Premier Lacrosse League (PLL) after the leagues merged in late 2020. Over six seasons in the NLL, Williams has accumulated 320 points in total and in seven outdoor seasons, Williams has 199 points.

Today, Williams, known for his athleticism and agility, has put down his lacrosse stick and is trying his hand as a linebacker in football. Here’s what he had to say about the opportunity with the Bills:

Williams is also expected to take snaps at the tight end position at some point during camp. According to an article on the Colorado Mammoth website, this isn’t a publicity stunt either.

The Buffalo Bills are reportedly serious about their evaluation of Williams, who stands 6’4″ and is widely regarded as an athletic specimen.
