Moments after the shooting attempt, blood could be seen on the president’s ear as he was surrounded by police and shouts rang out from the crowd. He then raised his fist in the air in defiance as security quickly led him off the stage.

Trump’s team quickly released a statement saying the 45th president was “doing well” after the incident in Butler, northeast of Pittsburgh.

Even as Trump was removed, rally-goers remained on the ground. Some heard bullets ricochet off the podium, severing a hydraulic line connecting the speakers, which began to collapse. Others quickly called family or checked their phones to see what had happened to the former president.

“Is he okay?” people began to ask. “Is he okay?”

Eventually, people began to come out. A small group of half a dozen people stopped in the fenced-in area where the media were. “It’s all your fault!” they shouted.

Police and then the Secret Service ushered everyone out. An hour after the shooting, the vast field was declared a crime scene, littered with empty plastic water bottles and soggy cardboard boxes that had once held cheese fries.
