4 Alaska Airlines crew hospitalized after “unidentifiable odor”

An Alaska Airlines flight from Hawaii to Seattle had to turn around after four flight attendants felt unwell and reported an “unidentifiable odor” in the cabin.

Flight AS810 departed Lihue on Kauai on Thursday evening, but the Boeing 737-890 was soon diverted to Honolulu “out of an abundance of caution” after the crew reported an unfamiliar odor, an Alaska Airlines spokesperson said in a statement to Business Insider.

“After the plane landed safely, all four flight attendants were taken to hospital for examination. None of the pilots or guests on board required medical attention,” it said.

According to local broadcaster KHNL, Honolulu’s emergency services said the flight attendants had shown symptoms such as “nausea and incoordination” due to the smell.

The airline said it was working to rebook the 119 passengers on other flights to Seattle. The aircraft has been taken out of service and is currently being “thoroughly checked” by maintenance technicians.

This is not the first time that such an incident has occurred on an Alaska Airlines flight.

In June, an Alaska flight from Honolulu to Anchorage was canceled after two crew members reported feeling unwell during the boarding process, USA Today reported.

The airline said the cause was likely an “unknown odor,” the report said.

In another incident in March, an Alaska plane en route from Portland to Phoenix turned around when crew and passengers noticed fumes in the cabin, NBC Los Angeles reports.

Melanni Rosales, a spokeswoman for the Port of Portland, told the outlet that seven people requested medical evaluation, but no one was taken to the hospital.

An Alaska flight from Seattle to Orange County, California, also had to turn around shortly after takeoff in 2019 due to a “cabin odor.”

Alaska told BI at the time that the flight’s pilots and flight attendants were medically screened at the airport before being taken to the hospital for further evaluation. It said none of the passengers were affected or reported symptoms.
