Off-duty San Angelo Police Detective arrested for drunk driving

According to a police press release, an off-duty San Angelo police detective was arrested early Friday morning for drunk driving.

On Friday, July 4, at approximately 12:56 a.m., Detective James Hernandez of the Texas Department of Public Safety was booked into the Tom Green County Jail for DUI (second offense).

According to jail records, Hernandez was released Friday on $1,500 bail.

“A Texas DPS trooper conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Det. Hernandez, which resulted in the arrest of the 54-year-old,” a press release states. “Any further inquiries regarding the arrest should be directed to the Texas Department of Public Safety.”

Following this arrest, SAPD initiated a formal internal investigation with the Office of Professional Standards.

“Hernandez, a 17-year veteran of the San Angelo Police Department, was off-duty when the incident occurred,” the press release said.

He was released from prison the same day at 11:38 a.m.

Anyone charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
