Tops Markets to Unveil 5/14 Honor Space Memorial on May 14

Tops Markets will dedicate its Tops 5/14 space of honor on Tuesday, May 14 to the memory of the victims of the racist attack of May 2022 on its Jefferson Avenue site. The memorial will be located at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Landon Street.

The 5/14 Honor Space will be unveiled during a private dedication ceremony, which will include a blessing and remarks before a victim recitation. A minute of silence around 2:28 p.m. will pay tribute to the victims, followed by the sound of bells.

The space features a sculpture titled Unity, created by Buffalo artist Valeria Cray and her son Hiram Cray, as well as 10 granite markers of honor for each victim. It also features a pear tree donated to the City of Buffalo as part of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum’s Survivor Tree Seedling Program, which provides seedlings from a tree that survived the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The Jefferson Ave. store. Tops will be open from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. on May 14, but will be closed from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The store will reopen from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Regular opening hours, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., will return on May 15.
