Houston Storm Recovery: CenterPoint Works to Restore Power to Half a Million Customers as Temperatures Expected to Rise

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — The Houston area is on the mend after devastating storms that hit the city Thursday. However, many are still without power as temperatures are expected to reach the 90s on Saturday.

ABC13’s Lileana Pearson was in the Heights to investigate what city officials are doing as residents wake up to a second day without air conditioning and a damaged refrigerator.

Some homes were lit and powered by a generator on Heights Boulevard.

It has been reported that nearly half a million customers in Harris County have yet to have their power restored.

CenterPoint Energy sent out an email Friday saying they had restored power to nearly 300,000 people, but outage tracking shows 520,000 people are without power.

Currently, CenterPoint said its primary focus is homes and businesses. In a post on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter, the company said workers went out before sunrise to continue repair work.

WATCH: Deadly Houston windstorm estimated to cause $5 billion to $7 billion in damage, AccuWeather tells ABC13

The storm that hit Houston, the fourth largest city in the United States, caused damage worth at least $5 billion, AccuWeather preliminary reports.

Power is expected to be out in some communities over the weekend, with the hardest-hit places, like Cypress, expected to be out until early next week.

In response to power outages and temperatures expected to reach the 90s, several cooling centers are operating to allow people to cool off, bathe and charge their electronic devices.

At least 10 people arrived at the University of the West Recreation Center overnight, but officials say they will expect more as temperatures rise Saturday.

Multiple cooling systems will operate throughout the weekend. You can find a list here.
