Rape and murder in Kolkata: CBI team takes accused Sanjay Ray into custody

Calcutta, August 14 (IANS): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team, which arrived in Kolkata from New Delhi on Wednesday to investigate the heinous rape and murder of a doctor, has taken the accused Sanjay Ray into custody.

The Kolkata Police volunteer is the only accused arrested in connection with the rape and murder of the 31-year-old trainee doctor last week while she was on duty at the government-run RG Kar Medical College & Hospital.

After taking Ray into custody, a team of CBI officials took him straight to the agency’s Central Government Office (CGO) complex in Salt Lake City on the northern outskirts of Kolkata and began interrogation.

According to sources, the CBI officials have been divided into different teams.

While a panel of interrogation experts will cross-examine Ray and others who will be summoned for questioning in due course, other members of the CBI team will conduct on-site investigations at RG Kar’s home.

Sources added that the forensic experts will accompany the CBI team in its on-site investigation at the hospital and collect samples from the crime scene, the seminar hall on the fourth floor of the building.

They will also interact with the staff, medical students and residents of RG Kar and try to get a picture of the sequence of events on the night of the gruesome crime.

The investigating officers will also examine the cell phones of the victim and the defendant as well as the call lists contained therein.

According to sources, the top priority of the investigation team is to determine whether the crime was committed by Ray alone, as claimed by the city police, or whether there were other accomplices.

Meanwhile, Indian Medical Association (IMA) National President Dr RV Asokan arrived in Kolkata on Wednesday morning and met the office bearers of the West Bengal chapter of the association.

Later in the day, he is scheduled to visit the victim’s residence at Panihati in North 24 Parganas district and speak to her family members.

Later in the day, Dr Asokan is expected to meet with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
