Southern Miss’ Dalton McIntyre selected by Atlanta Braves in MLB draft

HATTIESBURG — Southern Miss starting center fielder Dalton McIntyre was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 19th round and 581st overall pick in the 2024 MLB draft on Tuesday.

McIntyre, a junior, just completed his freshman season at Southern Miss where he was the leadoff hitter.

McIntyre is the fourth member of the Golden Eagles to be selected in this year’s draft. Shortstop and draftee DJ Layton was selected in the sixth round by the Baltimore Orioles, pitcher Niko Mazza was selected in the eighth round by the San Francisco Giants and pitcher and junior college transfer Lucas Elissalt was selected in the 13th round by the Detroit Tigers.

Here’s what the Atlanta Braves are getting with McIntyre.

What Dalton McIntyre Brings to the Atlanta Braves

McIntyre, a native of Jackson, Tenn., came to Southern Miss from Meridian Community College, where he pitched and outfielded. He never played at Southern Miss because of his dominance with the bat and in the field.

McIntyre didn’t start in the season opener, but he quickly became one of Southern Miss’ most valuable players because of his speed and touch. He mastered the inside single, where he would cut the ball on the ground and beat the throw to first base an incredible number of times. His biggest inside single was the game-winning RBI against Troy in the Sun Belt Conference tournament. McIntyre rarely struck out and drew 24 walks.

McIntyre was also one of two Golden Eagles to have five hits in a game. All of those hits were singles.

McIntyre could improve in an area like power. At 6-foot-3 and 175 pounds, he has just two home runs, 12 doubles and one triple in 2024.
