Data shows reduction in gun violence statistics in Buffalo, statewide

Shooting incidents across the state have declined over the past two years, according to new data released by the governor’s office. It’s a trend that’s also emerging in Western New York.

According to New York State’s Gun Involved Elimination Initiative, Western New York experienced 172 injury-related shootings in 2023, representing a 51% decrease from 350 incidents in 2021 .

“We passed the strongest gun safety measures in the nation and now we are seeing results: historically low levels of gun violence across New York,” said Governor Kathy Hochul. “Public safety is my number one priority, and I will continue to fight to achieve meaningful results and keep New Yorkers safe.”

“New York is proof that common-sense gun safety measures create safer communities,” added Lt. Governor Antonio Delgado. “By taking action to combat gun violence, we save lives and move our state forward. »

The program’s data also shows our region experienced 38 additional shootings in the first four months of this year, a 39% decrease from the previous five-year average for that period.
