PERIDOT – The Toyo Fire in western Graham County has grown to more than 2,000 acres and the Southwest Incident Management Team has taken command.

The San Carlos Apache Tribe announced the transfer of responsibility at 6 a.m. Monday.

The fire, which broke out Friday, covers 2,050 acres and was about 26 percent contained as of 10 a.m. Monday. The inflammation is believed to be caused by humans

Two helicopters, four hand crews, five engines and a tanker were used to fight the fire.

The tribe also announced that the closure of U.S. Highway 70 due to the fire, which was initiated Saturday and is expected to last two days, was lifted after 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the Hallelujah Square and La Bumba City communities, as well as residents on Route 3, were downgraded from Set to Ready status, meaning residents no longer faced the possibility of mandatory evacuation.
