Batavia begins construction of a new police station

The $15 million project is located near Alva Place and Bank streets in the city center.

BATAVIA, NY – The Batavia Police Department has broken ground on a brand new police station and headquarters.

The $15 million project is located near Alva Place and Bank Street in the city center.

“This is an extremely exciting day for the City of Batavia and especially for the members of the Police Department. I want to recognize the hard work of so many who made this transformative project a reality, including the City Council and the City Management Team,” said Eugene Jankowski Jr., President of the Batavia City Council. “In addition, we are forever grateful to Senator Schumer and Chris Jacobs for helping secure a grant that was critical for the City to obtain the loan from the USDA.”

“Officers and staff are very excited as our new police station will improve our ability to respond to emergency calls from residents, including medical, criminal and mental health, more quickly and efficiently as it is located in the heart of downtown,” said Batavia Police Chief Shawn Heubusch. “The new facility will allow the department to better connect with the community by becoming a venue for community events and educational forums, strengthening the already strong bond between the department and the community.”

The new 20,000-square-foot facility replaces the current police station, which was built in 1855. The city received funding through a $13 million U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) loan and a $2.5 million grant secured in 2022 from U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer and former Representative Chris Jacobs.

The new facility is scheduled to open next fall.
