9-1-1 exceeds expectations with a bee-nado, but there’s one thing I just can’t take from the Season 8 premiere

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for the Season 8 premiere 9-1-1called “buzzkill.”

The eighth season of 9-1-1 (which is only the second second on ABC after the move from Fox) has begun on the 2024 TV schedule, and promos for the premiere weren’t shy about hyping up the bee-nado on its way to Los Angeles. The bee nado was… well, pretty, as it sounds in the post-Sharknado I was in the pop culture zeitgeist and it was actually a lot more exciting than I expected. “Buzzkill” was a fun way to spend a primetime hour, but there’s one element to the episode that kills my enthusiasm.

How “Buzzkill” exceeded my expectations

First things first – I want to make it clear that I did not do this low Expectations go for the premiere, per se, but a Bee-Nado just doesn’t have the scale of that Poseidon Adventures-like crisis of Season 7, which rivaled Season 3’s tsunami disaster. I thought the swarm of millions of bees threatening LA and a plane crashing would be entertaining, but wouldn’t really rank as one of the drama’s most epic openings. The joke’s on me! I really underestimated how epic it is 9-1-1 could do with tens of millions of bees, and I give the show credit for finding another premiere-worthy disaster after delivering some of the more obvious disasters in previous years. A plane shot down by bees? An allergic mother and daughter trapped by bees in their car? A garden party destroyed by bees? The surprising twist of a second plane – this one by plane Athena And Dennis Jenkins – possibly sinking? It was a harrowing use of insects and I have to applaud the show for pulling that off in the premiere.

But part of the premiere really didn’t make sense to me, despite my usual willingness to suspend disbelief in action-packed shows like this 9-1-1 And 9-1-1: Lone Star.

What I can’t buy

My struggle with suspension of disbelief actually began well into the episode, after the first bee crisis on the bridge Desire managed to dissipate with smoke (and then get punished). Captain Gerrard for that). The episode transitioned to an in-show newscast, with the host stating:

Adrenaline and calamine lotion flew off shelves across the Southland after a truck carrying some 22 million killer bees was jackknifed east of downtown today. And we hear that the hives have now coalesced into what entomologists call a “super swarm” that includes 15 million people.

The reporter on the scene chimed in and said the super swarm disappeared from radar just before sunset, but experts warned: “These killer bees don’t fly after dark, so as temperatures drop it’s likely they won’t appear until shortly afterwards “Night.” Pretty scary, right? The scene then changed to Maddie And chimney‘s house, where the newscast was literally on hen And Karen came over with Denny and lots of pizzas.

At this point I assumed that Hen and Karen had decided to seek shelter with Maddie and Chimney so they could batten down the hatches to keep the bees out of just one house instead of two and keep all the children as safe as possible . Surely they brought other supplies besides the pizzas, right? Finally, Chim and Hen were in the middle of the fray to see how bad things had been earlier that day, and Maddie certainly had an idea after the 911 call with the young girl and her mother.

But no! No squatting, boarding up hatches or sealing cracks in doors and windows. Just a normal pizza night, as if there wasn’t a swarm of killer bees just waiting for the sunrise to start stinging again. And these two families weren’t the only ones who didn’t seem to make a fuss about the super swarm. Desire And Tommy hung around EddieThere is no sign that they were hiding. Nobody seemed to use the bee-free night hours to take precautions.

This seemed particularly strange given the newscast that specifically noted that people in LA were buying calamine lotion and adrenaline all over the city. (Also: Can you actually buy over-the-counter adrenaline in LA?) I could easily imagine the civilian wife who poured her entire divorce settlement into launching a perfume brand risking the bees for a garden party, but not this first responder.

Am I being too picky here? Maybe, but it just didn’t make sense to me, and I was immediately more interested in Athena’s storyline, which didn’t involve the bees in Buzzkill. It remains to be seen how much longer 9-1-1 will play the bee part of the three-part premiere event as it now deals with the problem of the plane crash.

I’ll definitely still be watching 9-1-1 continues on Thursdays this fall, and hopefully what happens next will completely eclipse what distracted me so much from the premiere.
