MOUNTAIN BROOK, Alabama (WIAT) – A woman who died when a tree fell on her Mountain Brook home was identified Tuesday morning.

The Mountain Brook Court condominiums are located in the area of Montevallo Road and Petticoat Lane. According to the Mountain Brook Fire Department, the incident occurred around 6:16 a.m. Monday and resulted in roads in the area being closed for over an hour.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 79-year-old Suzanne Michael Wilson.

Justin Baker is the battalion chief of the Mountain Brook Fire Department. He said that’s why it’s important to have weather radios.

“We are so prone to tornadoes and we just don’t believe that a normal thunderstorm can cause this kind of damage,” Baker said. “We had to bring in the Homewood Fire Department to help us shore up the building so it was safe enough to do a full search and assist with the rescue.”

Baker said at least two families were left homeless because a tree fell on the buildings.

The tree fell as strong storms moved through central Alabama, causing damage throughout the region and leaving many residents without power.
