Atlanta Georgia Mail Delays Jon Ossoff’s Statement to Louis DeJoy

Senator Jon Ossoff wrote a letter to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy asking for “current on-time delivery statistics in metro Atlanta within a week.”

ATLANTA — Sen. Jon Ossoff on Monday reiterated his demands that U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy provide answers about mail delays and the most recent statistics showing how much of metro Atlanta’s mail is actually delivered on time.

“He owes me answers,” Senator Ossoff told reporters.

Ossoff wrote a letter to DeJoy last Thursday asking for “current on-time delivery statistics in metro Atlanta within a week.”

That one-week deadline arrives this Thursday, May 16 – and Ossoff expects it to be met.

“The Postmaster General has only one job: deliver the mail on time,” the Democratic senator said. “He’s failing the people of Georgia, he owes me answers this week on his progress in solving this problem. And as I said in committee a few weeks ago: If he can’t solve this problem, I won’t don’t think he deserves this job.”

Ossoff, in those comments, referenced a Senate committee hearing in April in which he was vocal in his criticism of DeJoy and delays related to the February opening of a new centralized mail processing facility in Palmetto serving metro Atlanta and northern Georgia.

“You have weeks, not months, to fix this. And if you don’t fix it, 36% on-time deliveries, I don’t think you’re fit for this job,” he said, referring to the on-time delivery rate.

During the hearing, DeJoy acknowledged that he had not read a previous letter sent by Ossoff.

“Let me just give you some friendly advice: You should personally read the letters from members of the U.S. Senate committee that funds and oversees your operations, especially where you are failing miserably to fulfill your core mission in my state,” said Ossoff. .

11Alive has been tracking first-class mail on-time rates for weeks. Operations are slowly improving but the on-time rate for all first-class mail still remains less than 70%. Meanwhile, only 44% of single letters are processed on time.

11Alive also reached out to the USPS to see if they had fulfilled Ossoff’s request.
