Teenager charged after fatal crash in North Lake during horror weekend on WA roads

A Western Australian teenager has been charged with dangerous driving after an 18-year-old was killed and several others injured in a road accident in southern Perth on Saturday.

According to Western Australia Police, at approximately 11.40pm in North Lake, a white Toyota Hilux commercial vehicle was travelling southeast on Farrington Road when it crashed, overturned and collided with a black Jeep Patriot SUV travelling west on Farrington Road.

“An 18-year-old male passenger in the back seat of the Toyota died at the scene of the accident,” police said in a statement.

“The 17-year-old driver and three other male passengers of the Toyota – one aged 17 and two aged 18 – were taken to St John WA’s Royal Perth Hospital for treatment of various injuries.

“The 26-year-old driver and 27-year-old passenger of the Jeep were taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital in St. John, WA with minor injuries.”

On Sunday, police confirmed that a 17-year-old boy had been charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm (three counts) and dangerous driving occasioning bodily harm (two counts). He is due to appear in Perth Youth Court on Monday.

Prime Minister Roger Cook said on Sunday the accident “sounds horrific” and was “another reminder to all of us to stay safe and take extra care on the road.”

“I have very few details about this accident, but … my understanding is that it was a car rollover that also involved another vehicle,” he said.

“We just want you to be with your loved ones at the end of your journey and this is incredibly sad.

“I have also heard that police are working really hard to piece together the details of this accident. Anyone who may have witnessed this incident or has dashcam vision of this incident is asked to contact police.”
