Mother and boyfriend in northeast Ohio killed in car crash in Kentucky

CLEVELAND (WJW) – Two families in northeast Ohio are mourning after a suspected drunk driver ran into them in Kentucky.

“I don’t stop crying, I wake up crying,” said Darla Larson-Spurgeon, whose daughter Meagan Spurgeon, 30, of North Olmsted, was killed in the collision.

It happened on Sunday, June 9th after 11pm

Meagan and her boyfriend, 32-year-old Joshua Turza of Avon, had just dropped Meagan’s daughter off at camp and were on their way home on Interstate 75.

This happened around the same time that Kentucky State Police attempted to stop a BMW that was speeding at over 100 mph, but were unable to catch it.

Police believe the car was traveling at 150 mph when it crashed into the back of the car where Meagan and Josh were killed.

“He was going so fast they couldn’t catch him, and then their phone beeped that they had an accident,” Darla said with tears in her eyes. “By the time officers arrived, the car was already fully engulfed in flames and there was nothing they could do.”

The couple’s death was confirmed at the crime scene.

The driver, 47-year-old Jody Miller of Cincinnati, was arrested and charged with several offenses, including intoxicated manslaughter, reckless endangerment, speeding, fleeing and eluding.

He is being held on $1 million bail in Grant County, Kentucky.

According to police spokesman David Jones, it was not an accident, but an avoidable collision.

“This situation was created. He was driving too fast and did not stop for the police officer,” he said.

However, this is not much consolation for the families of the victims.

Meagan had just finished nursing school, got a job at the Cleveland Clinic, and bought a house to live in with her 7-year-old daughter. Kind-hearted Josh supported her and took parenting classes.

“He was a very loving man and wanted to be the best (step)father possible,” Darla said.

Now the family just wants justice.

“I don’t want him to ever be free again,” Darla said. “I want him to know that he has completely ruined the lives of several families and possibly the life of a little girl.”

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help with funeral expenses and to subsequently fund the care and education of Meagan’s daughter.
