Investigations into fatal car crash in Indiana County continue

ARMSTRONG TWP., INDIANA CO., Pennsylvania. – Police continue to investigate a two-vehicle crash in Indiana County that left an adult woman dead and both occupants of the other vehicle believed to be injured.

On June 12, 2024, at approximately 11:00 a.m., members of Troop A, Indiana Patrol Unit, and first responders were dispatched to a two-vehicle crash on SR 422, approximately 1/10 mile west of the intersection of North Ridge Road/South Ridge Road in Armstrong Township, Indiana County.

During the investigation, officers determined that a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta sedan had entered SR 422 from a driveway on the south side of SR 422. At the time, a 2004 Honda Civic sedan was traveling east on SR 422. The Honda Civic then struck the Volkswagen (approximate 11:00 a.m. position) at its approximate 12:00 o’clock position.

The Volkswagen then crossed the center turning lane and the westbound lane of SR 422. It then struck a guardrail at approximately 12:00 p.m. The Volkswagen eventually came to a stop at the guardrail, traveling northeast.

The Honda Civic eventually came to a stop on SR 422 heading northeast. Both vehicles sustained damage that was severe enough to jeopardize their ability to operate.

Driver 1, a known adult female who was the sole occupant of the Volkswagen, was pronounced dead at the scene by Indiana County Coroner Jerry L. Overman, Jr. Notification of next of kin is pending.

Operator 2, a 26-year-old woman from Shelocta, PA, was flown to Allegheny General Hospital for treatment.

The passenger in the Honda Civic, a little girl from Shelocta, Pennsylvania, was secured in a rear-facing child seat in the back seat and flown to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh for treatment.

The investigation is ongoing pending reconstruction by Troop A’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Specialist (CARS) unit.

Assisting agencies included Citizens’ Ambulance Service, Elderton Volunteer Fire Department, Indiana Fire Association, Indiana County Coroner’s Office and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene of the accident by Martin Diesel.
