Buffalo Bills WR Khalil Shakir injured during mandatory minicamp

The Buffalo Bills finished their first day of mandatory 2024 minicamp with wide receiver Khalil Shakir leaving the field early, suffering what Sal Capaccio called “some sort of lower-body injury.”

Capaccio went on to state that Shakir was observed in conversation with the team’s coaches before limping off the training ground and entering the field. As a result, Shakir did not return to complete the day’s session with his teammates.

At this time of year, injuries tend to occur at a frequency similar to regular season games. Returning players to the training field in an organized manner often leads to a sudden increase in physical work, which leads to injuries.

The problem here is the ambiguity of Shakir’s injury being called “lower body.” Capaccio will be the first to admit that he is not a doctor, although injuries that affect the lower body are usually a giveaway when observing the door.

After learning that linebacker Matt Milano had to practice in a limited capacity on the first day of minicamp following a serious leg injury last season in Week 5, there’s hope that Shakir didn’t suffer the same fate . We are of course far from having the information required on Shakir’s injury to qualify things as serious as the Milan situation. The encouraging news is that he reportedly limped off the field, rather than having a cart brought out. As such, it could be due to a myriad of things.

Entering his third season, Shakir will likely be heavily relied upon as the only wide receiver to build in-season chemistry with quarterback Josh Allen. Last season, Shakir caught an impressive 39 passes on 45 targets for 611 yards and two touchdowns, adding a run for 10 yards. Now that receivers Stefon Diggs and Gabe Davis are out of the equation, Shakir figures to absorb a lot of the looks. That is, if he can stay healthy and available on game days. The good news is that it’s only the beginning of June.
