Penn State mourns Anthony Lytton after tragic car accident

The Penn State football family mourned the loss of former defensive back AJ Lytton following a tragic car crash in Maryland on Saturday. Lytton was a passenger in a vehicle struck by another driver early Saturday morning. He was one of three victims killed in the crash. The other two victims were high school teammates of Lytton, former Oregon cornerback Kyree Jackson and former Marylander Isaiah Hazel. Lytton was 24 years old.

According to the preliminary police report, Jackson and Hazel’s deaths were confirmed by emergency responders at the scene of the accident. Lytton’s death was only confirmed after he was taken to a nearby hospital.

“The Penn State football family mourns the loss of former Nittany Lion AJ Lytton,” said a statement from the football program’s official X account on Saturday. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, high school and all those affected by the tragedy.”

Police are still investigating the accident. The preliminary report suggests that a driver of another vehicle attempted to change lanes at a high rate of speed and trapped the vehicle with the three victims. The car carrying the three high school teammates presumably left the road and struck several tree stumps before coming to an abrupt stop.

Lytton spent one season at Penn State after transferring from Florida State in 2021. He served as a backup cornerback for the Nittany Lions and contributed on special teams. Lytton then entered the transfer portal in 2022.
