Human remains found in East Patchogue lead to arrest – NBC New York

Police say a man was arrested after human remains were discovered on a busy road on Long Island.

According to Suffolk County police, detectives made the gruesome discovery on Thursday around 4:30 p.m. on Montauk Highway near County Road 101 in East Patchogue.

The remains were taken to the county medical examiner for an autopsy and identification. Shortly thereafter, detectives arrested 72-year-old Garry Cowell of Patchogue and charged him with concealing a human corpse and tampering with evidence.

He was due to be arraigned on Friday. Information about Cowell’s lawyer was not immediately clear. Police did not release the victim’s identity.

The investigation is ongoing.
