More security cameras will be installed at Buffalo Park

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Graffiti, illegal dumping and vandalism have been reported in the past at a local park, and calls are now being heard for increased security.

The Buffalo Common Council on Tuesday approved transferring $50,000 to Buffalo police to install additional security cameras at Houghton Park. For now, there is only one surveillance camera near the basketball court.

Lovejoy District Councilmember Bryan Bollman says he’s looking to fast-track this project and turn on the cameras this summer.

“Houghton Park is a key part of the Kaisertown neighborhood. I’m very happy to be able to provide funds and this vandalism, this graffiti, this illegal dumping is something that we want to curb,” Bollman said.

This comes as city residents continue to discuss a proposed master plan that would completely reshape the park. A final decision on how to proceed with the plan has not yet been made.

According to the Houghton Park master plan, residents have expressed interest in a new swimming pool, new splash pad, new fields for youth sports, more parking and increased park security.

Construction will begin in four years and be completed in 2032. The city is using American Rescue Plan funds to redevelop eight city parks, including Houghton Park.

Cost estimates for the Houghton Park overhaul are at $16 million.
