Atlanta United head coach Gonzalo Pineda fired

The club has not announced the reasons for Gonzalo Pineda’s dismissal. Two other assistant coaches were also fired, the team said in a statement.

ATLANTA — Atlanta United announced that its head coach was “fired” on Monday. On Tuesday, the club will launch a global search to find its next head coach.

The club has not announced why Gonzalo Pineda was fired, but has said it plans to bring in assistant coach Rob Valentino to fill his role.

Two other assistant coaches, Diego de la Torre and Eugenio Villazon, were also left out of the squad. The goalkeeping coach will step in to fulfill his roles.

“We are grateful to Gonzalo for his commitment and dedication to the club over the past four seasons. He has been an exemplary ambassador for the organization and we would like to thank him for his contributions to the club,” said Garth, CEO and president of Atlanta United. Lagerwey said.

According to the club’s press release, Pineda first joined the team in August 2021 and has led it to a 34-34-29 record in league play.

“We have made this decision in an effort to take the team in a new direction. As we continue to evaluate all aspects of our sporting operation, Rob will have our full support in turning our season around in the second half,” said Lagerwey said.

Valentino has been with the team since 2019 and has held several positions within the team.

This won’t be his first time serving as the team’s interim head coach.
