Video from a Houston suburb shows Hurricane Beryl making landfall in Sugar Land, Texas, as a Category 1 hurricane on Monday.

In the video, trees are seen blowing in one direction and strong winds are creating waves in the canal. Heavy rains are making it difficult to see far.

As of Monday morning, more than 1.5 million outages were reported in Texas as the hurricane barrels through the state with 75 mph winds and 5 to 15 inches of rain.

The video was taken at a residence in Sugarland, 25 miles southwest of Houston. The home is located on a man-made canal system in Chelsea Harbor, a neighborhood in Sugar Land.

Heavy rains, flash flooding and urban flooding are expected to affect the eastern part of the state, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Where is Beryl?

As of 9 a.m. local time, Beryl was 20 miles west of Houston and moving north at 12 mph.

The storm brought high winds reaching 75 mph and southeast Texas continues to face high winds and torrential rain, according to the National Hurricane Center.

“Although it remained over land for about 6 hours, radar and surface data (from the National Weather Service) indicate that the system weakened only slightly, with a fairly well-defined eye present,” the National Hurricane Center said.

Beryl is expected to become a tropical depression by this evening.

Over the next few days, Beryl will move northeast toward the Mississippi Valley and Ohio Valley until it dissipates in 72 to 96 hours.
