The following is a statement from Teamsters Joint Council 58 President Robert Mele regarding Cruise’s announcement that Houston will be the second city to resume operations:

“The Teamsters represent thousands of Texans who earn their living. Neither workers nor the general public feel safe around Cruise vehicles or any other robotaxi, and for good reason.

“Cruise is still the same company that had to suspend operations nationwide after a series of safety incidents in which its vehicles left a pedestrian seriously injured, collided with fire trucks, blocked garbage trucks, nearly collided with children in two separate incidents, caused a massive traffic jam outside a music festival and sparked a 20-car pileup in a tunnel. always involves the same vehicles that would have almost collided with a child and would have had difficulty recognizing them on camera.

“Cruise has done nothing to restore the public trust she lost as a result of these failures. This company should not be present anywhere – with or without a human operator – while it remains under federal investigation.

“This is not a Republican or Democratic issue. This is a security issue. We encourage policymakers and other stakeholders to hold Cruise and other driverless car and truck makers accountable before, not after, they have the opportunity to operate on our roads.

Teamsters Joint Council 58 represents more than 15,000 workers across Texas.
