Houston Board of Education candidate disqualified

Houston Board of Education candidate disqualified

Clyde Jackson is a longtime Houston County teacher and coach.

HOUSTON COUNTY, Ga. — A Houston County runoff election scheduled for June is canceled because one candidate is disqualified.

He is Clyde Jackson, candidate for Position 7 on the Board of Education, according to Board of Elections member Henry Childs.

Jackson is a longtime Houston County teacher and coach.

His wife is also a veteran educator and principal.

State law says a school administrator or someone married to an administrator cannot serve on the school board.

While Jackson’s website says his wife is retired, Childs says she is still under contract and still being paid by the school district.

His wife Traci Jackson works part-time for the district and earns $68,208 as a district and school effectiveness coordinator, according to a Houston County School Board spokesperson.

Because she is a retired educator, the amount of work she can do is limited. The district calls it a 49% role. But if she worked full time, she would earn $142,000.

If Tuesday’s vote stands, Jackson’s opponent, Angel Brown, will fill the Post 7 seat without a runoff.

13WMAZ spoke with Jackson Wednesday morning. He said he disagreed with the board’s vote.
