Man killed in shooting involving BK police identified

BROOKLYN, NY — A 26-year-old man who was killed when he apparently attacked two police officers with a knife in Brooklyn last Sunday has been identified, officials said.

Andre Mayfield of East New York approached a licensed NYPD patrol car on Eldert Street in Bushwick and knocked on the window – showing two knives to two police officers sitting inside, NYPD officials said during a press conference on Sunday.

Officers had just finished responding to a domestic violence call around 2:30 a.m., NYPD Patrol Chief John Chell said.

The two officers got out of their vehicle to try to verbally de-escalate the situation, but when that didn’t work, they deployed their Tasers, police said.

The tasers initially worked and Mayfield dropped one of his knives, but was able to get up with the second knife in his hand, police said.

“He ignored their warnings and charged toward the officers,” Chell said.

The officers then fired their weapons and shot Mayfield, who was later pronounced dead at a local hospital, police said.

“We try everything we can to de-escalate the situation with emotionally disturbed people, but sometimes that doesn’t work for us. A very rough night for these two officers and for the (emotionally disturbed person’s) family,” Chell said.

According to a report in the New York Daily News, the Mayfield family called the police response “over the top.”
