Two dead in train crash in Seneca County on Thursday

WEST INDEPENDENCE, Ohio – Two people were killed Thursday afternoon when their vehicle passed through a railroad crossing with the barrier down and collided with a train in Seneca County.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Ellen Atherton, 72, and Rex Atherton, 75, died at the scene of the accident on U.S. 224, about six miles south of Fostoria.

Ellen was driving a Kia Soul northeast on the road with Rex as a passenger around 1:30 p.m. and went through a downed railroad crossing arm, according to OSHP. The train then struck her vehicle, sending it crashing into a utility pole.
