Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin hasn’t publicly named Russell Wilson or Justin Fields as the team’s starting quarterback, but the latter believes he’s shown what he can accomplish in pursuit of QB1 honors.

“I think I showed what I can do,” Fields said Thursday, per ESPN’s Brooke Pryor. “I think the time I spent with the first team practicing in training camp, I think it went well. I think we grew a lot every day, but at the end of the day, it’s not about me.”

“I mean, I’m just going to come here every day, every day, the same person, be the leader of this team and work hard, and everything else will be taken care of.”

As Pryor pointed out, Tomlin said Wilson was in “pole position” for the job heading into the offseason. Wilson will also start the Steelers’ final preseason game against the Detroit Lions on Saturday. Tomlin has already told reporters that the team will play starters in that game.

In the team’s final preseason game (a 9-3 win over the Buffalo Bills), Wilson started and played five series. Fields then stepped in and played five series.

Wilson completed 8 of 10 passes for 47 yards. Fields completed 11 of 17 passes for 92 yards and added 42 yards rushing on eight carries.

Ultimately, it appears Wilson still holds pole position, especially since Tomlin told reporters Thursday that “nothing has changed in terms of where those guys are positioned.”

And with Wilson starting the Steelers’ second and third preseason games, it seems like a formality that he’ll be named QB1.

It hasn’t happened yet, but signs point to Wilson being called up when the Steelers visit the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1 on Sunday, Sept. 8.

Whether Wilson will be the starting quarterback all year remains to be seen, and perhaps Fields will get that call at some point.
