Attempted robbery with backyard barbecue shooting nets man 20 years.

Joshua Satchell, 38, of Salisbury has been sentenced to 20 years after pleading guilty to attempted armed robbery in an incident that involved a shooting at a backyard barbecue.

Here’s what we know now.

The Salisbury native was sentenced in Circuit Court for Wicomico County by Judge Kathleen L. Beckstead, who ordered Satchell to the Maryland Division of Corrections for the maximum time allowed. On June 11, 2024, he pleaded guilty, and sentencing was postponed for a pre-sentence investigation to be completed. Satchell remained incarcerated pending the Aug. 15 sentencing.

What happened in the backyard barbecue shooting

On Aug. 20, 2023, while the victim and his friends were enjoying a backyard barbecue, Satchell, along with four co-conspirators, targeted and robbed them at gunpoint, according to prosecutors. When the victim turned to flee from the assailants, he was shot in the back of the neck, paralyzing him.

While Satchell was not the individual who fired the gun, he participated in the robbery and is therefore legally culpable for the events that led to the victim’s injury.

Detective Barkley led the investigation with Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Lauren Bourdon prosecuting the case.
