Today isolated thunderstorms, brief relief from the heat

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – A weak cold front brings scattered showers and thunderstorms and a brief cooling spell, ending the week with another round of brutal heat and humidity.

TODAY

The weak cold front continues to approach the Grand Strand and Pee Dee this morning. So far, most of the showers and storms have been in the Northeast.

Today there is a chance of isolated showers and thunderstorms. The greatest probability will be during the day and in the afternoon.(WMBF)

There will be more clouds today and humidity will continue as we begin the new work week. Highs will be just above 80 degrees today. As the cold front approaches the region, a few more showers and storms should develop. Unfortunately, there will be no widespread showers and storms today. Although our area could use some much-needed rain, the chances of that today are slim. The closer you are to the beach today, the better your chances of showers and storms.

Rain chances will peak in the early afternoon as the cold front moves through the area. The latest data suggests the cold front will interact with sea breezes, allowing additional thunderstorms to form along the Grand Strand during this time period.

The cold front will interact with the sea breeze and possibly bring isolated showers.

Although a strong thunderstorm with frequent lightning cannot be ruled out, the main danger in any storm is a short period of heavy rain and gusty winds.

SHORT RELIEF EARLY THIS WEEK

Once the front moves south of the area by tonight, we’ll see “cooler” and drier air move in on Tuesday and Wednesday. Highs will continue to stay between 27 and 30 degrees, but humidity will drop and the air will become a bit drier. If you need to get some work done outside, Tuesday and Wednesday are the perfect days to do it!

The highest humidity will be this weekend.

THE WARMTH WILL RETURN BY JULY 4TH

The brief respite from heat and humidity will end on the Fourth of July and into the weekend. In fact, we’re already pointing to Friday through Sunday as heat will be widespread above 105°.

The 4th of July is going to be warm and humid! The weather forecast is only getting warmer as we head into the weekend, with the heat index ranging from 40 to over 43 degrees Friday through Sunday.(WMBF)

Although humidity will increase on July 4, the forecast remains dry! Inland, temperatures will be between 30 and 35 degrees Celsius. The heat index will feel like triple-digit temperatures, but should stay below the 40° mark.

The muggy and hottest period begins Friday and continues through next weekend. A heat watch is likely and a heat advisory cannot be ruled out as heat index values will rise above 110° in some locations on Friday and Saturday. There is still a risk of some showers and thunderstorms, but that will not be enough to eliminate the high humidity and heat.
