Lawsuit against Pennsylvania medical staffing agency claims employee sexually abused patients – WPXI

A lawsuit has been filed against a home care and medical staffing agency in western Pennsylvania after an employee pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a patient.

The lawsuit filed against Brightstar Care of Southwestern Pennsylvania accuses Vanessa Callendar of sexually abusing a patient while she was supposed to be providing care.

Callendar was hired by Brightstar after she was fired by her previous employer for inappropriate sexual behavior, the plaintiff’s attorney said.

The victim is an adult with serious illnesses, including multiple sclerosis.

“MS. Callender came to my client’s home to care for him during the night shift. In doing so, she helped my client to bed and then sexually assaulted her in various ways. Before she left, she made the comment that she would be back tomorrow β€œto do it again,” attorney Amy Mathieu said in a press release.

Mathieu said her client was diagnosed with PTSD, depression and anxiety as a result of the assault.

In March, Callendar pleaded guilty to institutional sexual assault. She will be sentenced on May 29.

Channel 11 has reached out to Brightstar. A staff member who answered the call said he had no comment.
