Serial killer and rapist now works at a children’s school

A convicted serial killer and a rapist was discovered working at a school with children as young as four.

Karla Homolka, who was imprisoned for manslaughter for her role in the rape and murder of three teenagers in the 1990s, volunteers at the Greaves Adventist Academy in Montreal, Canada.

The 47-year-old was convicted in 1993 along with her then husband Paul Bernardo of the torture, rape and murder of schoolgirls Kristen French and Leslie Mahaffy – as well as her own 15-year-old sister Taffy.

Shocked parents at the private Christian school saw Holmolka dropping off and picking up their children at the academy, only to discover that she had spent time in the classrooms with other students.

A parent told City News: “We don’t want them here.

“How would you feel if you knew your child was involved with a serial killer? That’s not right.”

The school confirmed that Holmolka was invited by a teacher to a knitting demonstration class and on another occasion brought a dog.

Homolka even volunteered to babysit kindergarten-age children on a school trip to the Montreal Science Centre, but the school insists she was never left alone with the students and was not a regular volunteer.

The academy also confirmed that it knew about her criminal past because Holmolka had to undergo a background check.

A statement said: “The Quebec Conference of Seventh-day Adventists and the administration of Greaves Adventist Academy are committed to providing a quality education and enriching learning experiences for their students.

“While we address the concerns raised by parents and other stakeholders, anyone associated with the school is welcome to contact the Quebec Conference Education Office.”

Stan Jensen, spokesman for the Seventh-day Adventist Church, added: “The school board was fully aware of who she was.

“She is not a regular volunteer and can never be alone with children, either at school or at church.”

Holmolka’s sentence was reduced to twelve years when she pleaded guilty to manslaughter charges and testified against her ex-husband.

She separated from Bernando in prison and married her lawyer’s brother after her release in 2005.

The couple have three children together and briefly moved to the Caribbean before returning to Canada in 2016.

Bernardo is currently serving a life sentence, but there is a possibility he could be eligible for parole later this year.
