Spirit Airlines Ends Change and Cancellation Fees: GA Travel

ATLANTA, GA — Georgia travelers flying with Spirit Airlines no longer have to pay change or cancellation fees, the airline confirmed this week.

Before the new policy, Spirit’s fees ranged from $50 to $119, although changes and cancellations 60 days or more in advance were free.

The Florida-based discount airline decided to end the fee around the same time that rival Frontier Airlines made a similar change. Denver-based Frontier announced last week that it was waiving change fees on some tickets.

“Spirit has evaluated changes to our product and strategy that will help us be more competitive, improve the customer experience and return to profitability,” the company said in a prepared statement. “We are excited to roll out a no change, no cancellation fee policy for all guests beginning May 17.”

Spirit serves the Atlanta Airport as well as several Florida airports, including Tampa, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers and West Palm Beach.

Spirit and Frontier are trying to return to profitability after the Covid-19 pandemic, CNBC reported, while major airlines reported profits. Spirit also offers packages that include perks like checked bags.

The end of cancellation fees was not related to the Biden administration’s new rules targeting what it called “junk fees.” The U.S. Department of Transportation has issued a rule requiring airlines to be upfront about additional fees such as those related to checked or carry-on bags, CNBC reported.
