A man in his 70s has died and two other people have been injured in an incident on a farm in County Londonderry.

Police said the incident, which was not treated as suspicious, occurred on Cullyrammer Road outside Garvagh on Thursday.

BBC News NI understands workers were working on a silo pit wall when the accident occurred.

It is believed a father and son were involved and that the man killed was not the farmer.

The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said it dispatched three emergency services to the scene and took the two injured men to hospital.

One of the men was flown by ambulance to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast and the other was taken by road to the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine.

DUP’s Michelle Knight-McQuillan says community is in shock (BBC)

Democratic Unionist Party councilor Michelle Knight-McQuillan said the Garvagh community was shocked.

“With this accident, a black cloud has come over the community here today,” Ms. Knight-McQuillan said.

“This is a rural and close-knit community and like most farming communities, everyone knows each other.

“The community will undoubtedly rally around the families of the bereaved and injured.”

Police said officers would support an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

A spokesman for the HSE said they were aware of an incident in the Garvagh area and were attending.
