Storm repairs mean not all HISD schools will open Monday

Storm repairs mean not all HISD schools will open Monday

Thanks to extensive storm damage, not everyone was able to get their power back and not all Houston ISD schools will be able to open Monday despite crews working through the weekend to restore and make repairs after as Thursday’s hurricane-force winds swept through Houston, according to HISD.

Municipal courts will be closed Monday; municipal libraries and community centers will also be closed, except for those identified as cooling centers. An area on Travis, from McKinney to Polk, will be closed by law enforcement as crews continue to clean up broken glass and other debris.

Centerpoint released a map showing when it expects power to be restored to certain areas of the city. He acknowledged that with the team’s high temperature this week, it is more important than ever that power is restored.

HISD schools that plan to be open as well as those that will be closed on Monday are listed below. HISD released the following statement:

Any school that is not ready to welcome students by 9 p.m. today will not open tomorrow, May 20. On these campuses, HISD will provide food distributions for students only tomorrow, from 7-9 a.m. and 11-1 p.m.

Additionally, HISD has temporarily relaxed uniform and dress code policies for campuses where students return to class on Monday. We know that many of our families and staff are still without power and do not want students to stay home because they do not have access to laundry.

Finally, HISD understands that some families may experience issues that prevent their students from attending classes tomorrow. If you are in this situation, please contact your child’s campus if possible to inform staff that your child will be absent. Staff members can also help you access any help you need.

Additionally, because Herod Elementary School was still not air-conditioned as of 8 p.m. Sunday and may not open Monday, plans for the protest at the school were changed to Wednesday at 7:15 a.m.

Parents, students and community members are protesting the firings of the principal, 11 teachers and at least one staff member. Critics say no justification was given for the layoffs, that the actions had a negative impact on the school and community, and call for an end to state control over the district.

HISD released several lists of schools that would be open Monday, juggling them throughout the day. Some of the schools initially thought to be open will not be. This list was published at 9:48 p.m.
